ABB 'ACS600' range of Variable Speed Drive Products

ABB are the worlds leading supplier of Variable Speed Drive products and systems for use in industrial, commercial and residential applications, improving the manageability, efficiency and energy economy of processes.

The ACS 600 range is a new generation frequency converter that achieves the ultimate in AC motor control performance. The first AC drive to utilise Direct Torque Control (DTC), the ACS 600 accurately controls the speed and torque of any standard squirrel cage motor – without encoder or tacho-generator feedback.

Advantages of ‘DTC’

  • 10 times faster torque response than standard PWM inverters.
  • 8 times more accurate speed control.
  • Up to 10% more energy efficient by minimising motor losses through ‘Flux Optimisation'.
  • Full Torque available at zero speed without any encoder feedback.

The ACS 600 product family includes models to suit any application or operating environment, with a complete selection of voltage, power and enclosure ratings, combined with highly flexible control and communication capabilities.

Each ACS 600 range type has two ratings, normal use and heavy-duty use. The normal use rating is specified so that the overload capacity requirements of most applications – both the constant torque and square law torque – are met. Heavy-duty use rating fulfils high overload capacity requirements. The ACS 600 is available in supply voltages of 380-690V A.C, with degrees of protection IP00, IP21, IP22 or IP54.

The ACS 600 range features a multilingual alphanumeric control panel that displays messages to the operator in plain phrases, greatly simplifying set-up, operation and fault diagnostics. The panel can be mounted on the ACS 600 enclosure or remotely. The parameter copy feature allows all drive parameters to be copied from one drive to another.

The standard control connections include three analogue inputs, two analogue outputs, six digital inputs and three digital outputs. With optional I/O Extension Modules and Fieldbus Adapter Modules, the communication capabilities can be extended. Optional modules mount on standard DIN rail and connect via a high-speed fibre optic link.

The ACS 600 range comes equipped with an extensive library of pre-programmed application macros, which, at a touch of a button, allow rapid configuration of inputs, outputs and drive parameters. This maximises convenience and minimises start-up time.

ACS600: 75kW to 2800kW '12-pulse Drive' with 'DTC' technology.

Harmonic distortion of the supply network and the requirement to meet the current G5/4 legislation are of major importance. This can be acheived with the ABB range of standard 12-pulse drives which cover powers from 75kW and include the dry-type phase shift transformer, inverter, control panel, supply fuses and all accessories required.

ACS624 diagram.jpg (32077 bytes)

Features:

The ACS624 open chassis IP00 range is ideally suited to panel builders and system integrators offering a quick and easy solution and a very low component count for the complete kit.

The ACS627 free-standing cubicle range is available in IP22, IP42 and IP54 versions.

The phase shift transformers are specially designed for 12-pulse variable speed drives and virtually any primary voltage can be catered for. The standard selection is for a nominal 415V system.

Current harmonics are reduced by 80% in average compared to a 6-pulse solution. Current harmonics content only 5-15% when measured at the primary side of the phase shift transformer.

Technical Specification:

See above information on ACS600 inverter features. The ACS624 has a 12-pulse rectifier at 415V AC.

Scope of Supply:

Inverter Module(s) - Systems above 250kW consist of two inverter modules in parallel.

Phase shift transformer (dry-type) with PTC temperature monitoring.

Control unit with fibre optic connectors.

Inverter keypad with control panel door mounting kit.

6-off rectifier fuses.

Options:

Earth-fault protection circuit for transformer and motor.

AC chokes may be fitted to balance the secondary currents of the phase shift transformer.

ACS600: 11kW to 2800kW 'Regenerative Drive' 3-phase 380-690V AC, 50/60Hz input, with 'DTC' technology.

The ACS600 regenerative drives are a range of four quadrant drives that incorporate an inverter in the supply side to regenerate braking energy. Large energy savings can be acheived in applications where energy from the braking of the motor can be fed back onto the network and used by other applications. In addition, large braking resistors, which take up valuable space and dump considerable waste heat into the atmosphere can be eliminated.

The ACS611 and ACS617 Regenerative comprise two inverters, one for the supply and one for the motor. The active IGBT line supply unit controls the two way flow of energy between the DC link and the line.

The active  IGBT allows the power factor to be maintained close to unity. Instead of the 6 step operation of a standard diode rectifier, the IGBT is actively modulated to reduce harmonic overtones (5th, 7th etc). A filter in front of the IGBT buffers the switching frequency and further reduces harmonics. The input current is near sinusoidal.
