We stock the complete range of ABB Comp-AC Variable Speed Drives (0.12 – 37kW), and the ABB ACS600 range of single-drives up to 250kW is available within a few hours. We offer a genuine 24-hour, 365-day call-out service, so downtime is kept to a minimum. The ABB distributor network spans the whole of the U.K. and we have access to stock at all of our fellow distributors.

'Free of Charge' Energy Saving Site Surveys

We will provide a 'Free of Charge' Energy Saving Site Survey. This involves a tour around your plant with your site electrical engineer, which will outline areas of potential energy saving through the use of Variable Speed Drives. This may also include applications where the use of High Efficiency (EFF1) motors, Softstarts or Energy Optomisers may also be cost-effective. There may also be applications where simple control modifications can be made to provide low cost energy savings. A Site Survey will usually take 2 - 3 hours and will concentrate on your major consumers of electrical energy. Usually 80% of energy consumption is in 20% of the applications (Pareto's rule). These applications can be such as cooling water pumps, extraction fans and air compressors. After completion of the site survey we will provide a comprehensive report which includes the applications with the greatest potential for energy saving along with a proposed Variable Speed Drive control philosophy, an estimated price for the installation and the potential energy savings that will be realised.

On-site Energy Monitoring and Harmonic Distortion Monitoring and Advice

Once an energy saving application is identified, we can monitor the energy use of this potential variable speed drive application with our state-of-the-art analyser, which will produce results in easy to understand graphical format from which a report is produced. This will enable us to provide a more accurate prediction of the energy consumption and an accurate payback time. A comparison may also be made after installation of the inverter to prove the energy savings and determine the actual payback time.

We can also provide monitoring of the Harmonic Distortion of a sites supply voltage to determine if an installation complies with the Electricity Authority Harmonic Recommendation G5/4. Advice can then be given for methods of harmonic reduction if necessary.

Energy Saving Calculations and Quotations with Payback Times

When we provide you with a quotation for a Variable Speed Drive installation, we invariably supply a comprehensive breakdown of the prospective amount of energy that the application will save. By using the amount paid for electricity, the hours run, the percentage loading and the application characteristics, we can provide a reasonably accurate estimate of the payback time against capital expenditure.

Replacement of DC Drive systems and Other Speed Control Methods

Due to the extremely accurate torque and speed response of the ABB ACS600 'DTC' Variable Speed Drive it is now possible to directly replace DC drive systems with an inverter and a standard induction motor. This leads to reduced mechanical maintenance and energy savings in our experience of some 20%.

We have also replaced Eddy Current Drives, Hydraulic Motor control systems, Mechanical speed reduction through gearboxes and two-speed motor arrangements.

Variable Speed Drive 'Loan' Service to Prove Applications

We have a range of ABB variable speed drives up to 178A (110kW Pump and Fan) that can be temporarily installed on various applications to prove the energy saving benefits. This, coupled with our Energy Monitoring service, will enable companies to put business cases together for the advantages of fitting Variable Speed Drives for control of their plant.
