Inverter Drive Systems Ltd

IDS are ABB Inverter specialists. We specify, install, commission, repair, service and hire variable speed drives.

ABB Motors

Inverter Drive Systems Ltd is an ABB Value Provider (VP) for Inverters, but of course an inverter without a motor to control is rather pointless. We can supply ABB Motors and Inverter packages at competitive prices.

We... Specify, Install, Commission, Service, Repair and Hire, ABB Inverters

IDS has been an ABB inverter partner since 1994 providing complete support and backup to ABB’s market leading products. We are proud to be an ABB VP (Value Provider).

ABB Motors

ABB motors are classified according to their physical differences and the purpose of use. Motors are divided into:

  • two ranges of induction motors
  • four types of motors for explosive atmospheres
  • frequency controlled motors including synchronous motors
  • and special application motors which includes marine, brake and smoke extraction motors.

Standard Induction Motors

IDS engineers are happy to advise on the best motor drive package for your application. ABB offer two types of low voltage induction motors, both available in cast iron and aluminium:

  • Process performance motors
  • General performance motors

Process performance motors are the most popular motor for demanding industrial uses and cover frame size 63-450 or 0.12-1000 kW and are available in three energy efficiency classes: IE2, IE3 and IE4.

General performance motors, whilst they have less optional features than the process performance motors, they are available off the shelf, with frame sizes of 56-355 or 0.06-355 kW.

Motors for explosive atmospheres

ABB Motors for explosive atmospheres (Ex-Motors), comply fully with the ATEX directive 94/9/EC. In addition to ATEX certification, the global IECEx certificate for most ABB Ex-Motors. Equipment for explosive areas is grouped by location: above or below ground. And by type of explosive atmosphere it is intended for, i.e. gas or dust. Motors for explosive atmospheres are available from frame size 71-450 (80-450 in flame proof design) or from 0.25 to 1000 kW. Frequency Controlled Motors

Invariably used with a frequency converter, frequency controlled motors include two types of synchronous motors: Synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM) and permanent magnet motors as well as roller table motors, high-speed motors and servomotors.

ABB provides two SynRM motor series: High-output and IE4 synchronous reluctance motors. The high-output motors are suited to applications requiring high power to size ratio and extend from frame size 90-315 or 1.1-350 kW with a minimum efficiency rating of IE2. IE4 SynRM motors provide the highest efficiency available, IE4 and range from frame size 160-315, or 7.5-315 kW.

Permanent magnet motors are suited for applications requiring high torque density, operating at a maximum speed of 600 r/min at 400 V. These motors are provided with either self-cooling or separate cooling. Frame sizes in the low voltage area range from 280-450 and a maximum of 1000 kW (with a 690 V voltage).

The high-speed range covers standard motors in the 3600-5100 rpm speed area. Custom motors have been made up to 60,000 rpm.

Low voltage servomotors include two series of High dynamic power (HDP) motors rated IP54 and IP23. These motors provide extremely good power to size ratio through low moment of inertia and high pulse torque and are best suited to rough conditions where overloads may occur. The motors range from frame size 100-250 or 2-750 kW.

DC Upgrades

If you are thinking about upgrading your DC motor, IDS are happy to specify an AC motor that will give you the same or better torque and speed performance as your current motor.
