Inverter Technology set to save Asphalt Plant in excess of £66k per annum

Industry: Asphalt Plant Applications: Burner Fan & Coater Drum Amount saved each and every year: £66,736 Investment Pay Back Time: Under 12 months An Asphalt plant in the north west of England is predicted to reduce the cost of replacing burnt out motors and improve its plant uptime by fitting inverters to a coater drum motor and a burner fan motor. Inverter Technology set to save Asphalt Plant in excess of £66k per annum Coater…

Food and Beverage – Speaking the language of our customers

In this series, we address some of the questions that customers typically ask. Here, the Editor of a leading savoury snack magazine set us a challenge: “The readership of the magazine will have a good general technical knowledge (some of them will be production engineers, for instance), but they’re not drive or motor specialists as such. So really, they’d be thinking on the level of ‘what can these systems do for me’ in terms of…

Harmonic Pollution in the Water Industry

This week we feature a recent article from ABB’s water industry manager for UK & IE, Stuart Foster. Writing in Drives & Controls, Stuart explains the challenges Water Companies face when it comes to harmonic pollution: “Have you noticed how a single word can mean one thing in one context, but something totally different in another? Take harmonics for example – to a singer, it means the ability to sing more than one note at…

Waste company increases productivity by eight percent with ABB drives

ABB drives increase process speed and accuracy, improving productivity and efficiency An eight percent increase in productivity is achieved by installing two ABB variable-speed drives on a waste sorting machine. Wastecycle is a waste reclamation and recycling company with two plants, in Nottingham and Leicester. The company collects and processes 450,000 tonnes of waste each year, over 200,000 tonnes of which is recycled into products such as fuel for power plants. The variable-speed drives (VSDs)…

Working Together to Save Energy in a Laboratory facility – Camfil and IDS

Camfil Farr have a range of energy efficient filters which in combination with ABB inverters allow the same quantity of air flow whilst consuming less power. Working together IDS and Camfil carried out an energy efficiency motor audit and a filter energy survey on a local laboratories’ applications, mostly air handling units. We submitted our findings to Camfil who together with their filter energy survey made a complete offering to the client.  The client was…

Drives reduce energy and cut maintenance and ammonia discharge

Anglian Water has cut aerator energy use in half with variable speed drive technology, while removing the threat of blockages A sewage treatment works operated by Anglian Water has halved its aerator energy costs, reduced maintenance and cut ammonia to almost zero levels following the installation of an ABB variable-speed drive. The drive was installed on a 4 kW sewage aerator at the Swallow unmanned treatment works in Lincolnshire. Wayne Barley, northern energy and efficiency engineer for Anglian Water, says: “The vertical rotor…

Water Industry Inverter Checklist

IDS have a special relationship with the water industry. We have been specifying, supplying, installing and commissioning inverters, giving technical support and providing inverter servicing within the industry for over 15 years. Inverters benefit the water industry enormously from the substantial energy savings when installing inverters to pumps and fans. There are other major benefits of installing inverters including, gentle starts, unity power factor and process improvements. Water Industry Inverter Checklist To assist in the…

University Energy Saving Potentials

A free energy efficiency motor audit was undertaken to look into energy savings within a scientific studies building at a university in Cambridge. University Energy Saving Potentials The findings revealed that there were 12 AHUs (Air Handling Units) at the university. There are two 5.5 kW motors on each extract fan that run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This totals to 332 kW of installed power. The air flow through these AHUs…

Using Inverters Within The Coatings Industry

IDS are an associate members of BCF (British Coatings Federation). We are keen to explore the energy saving possibilities using inverters within the coatings industry and have seen a couple of sites. A large number of applications have been identified within the coatings industry where inverters can assist in the reduction of wasted energy, these include mixers, compressors, fume extraction, dc to ac conversions also air handling units (AHUs),  chilled water pumps and cooling towers….

Why Add An ABB Inverter To Crushers

A crusher is used to take large minerals and make them smaller. These can often be large, heavy machines. They are found at quarries and mines to produce the correct sized product for further processing or selling on to the customer. They come in various forms but are usually jaw, cone or impact (hammer) crushers. Why Add An ABB Inverter To Crushers Inverters lend themselves to crusher control for the following reasons: High starting torque…
